Poems in the Sky

Trees are poems that earth writes upon the sky,
We fell them down and turn them into paper,
That we may record our emptiness. ~ Khalil Gibran

The Weston Quarry Garden at the Don Valley Brick Works, also known as Evergreen Brick Works, is a former quarry and industrial site located in the Don River valley in Toronto, Canada. The Don Valley Brick Works operated for nearly 100 years and provided bricks used to construct many well-known Toronto landmarks, such as Casa Loma, Osgoode Hall, Massey Hall, and the Ontario Legislature.

Govind the faithful - not a driver, but a friend.

Govind drove his taxi with a smile. It is rare to meet a person for the first time, and then the one who remains as a faithful friend for the most part of one's lifetime. Govind, for the most part, was a genuine human being and a trusted friend of our family, who never let us down

It is with great sadness that I learnt that he passed away yesterday.

He drove his taxi to make a living, not to get rich. With a broad smile and humility personified, he took his profession seriously - always punctual, reliable, safe and trustworthy. My first meeting and ride with him was in the early 1990's. My first impression about Govind was his broad smile, giving me the feeling as if he had known me for years. He will always be remembered to have come early to our house and sleep in his taxi so that he wouldn't be late to take us to the airport in the morning. He belonged to a set of a brand and breed of another era of taxi-drivers of a Goa of the good old days - calm, cool, composed, humble - and ever willing to help.

After retiring from driving his taxi, ill health took the better of him. I often thought about him. I was looking forward to see him on my next trip to Parra, Bardez, Goa, in the near future. The village of Nagoa, Bardez, has lost a great human being. He leaves behind his wife and 6 children - 4 daughters and 2 sons.

Rest in peace Govind. Yes, I will miss you dearly on my next trip to Goa. I will miss the daily news you would have to relate, and the expert driving as youe took on one sweeping curve after another through the winding Goan hilly countryside, from and to the Dabolim airport to pick and drop, and taking us to different parts of Goa to see our relatives and friends, picnics and outings.
