The Big Dipper and the Polaris

The Big Dipper in the northern sky and the North Star, Polaris. The Big Dipper is low in the northeast sky at nightfall, but it’ll climb upward during the evening hours, to reach its high point for the night in the wee hours after midnight. A well-known trick for finding Polaris, the legendary North Star, is that the two outermost stars in the bowl of the Big Dipper point to it. Those stars are Dubhe and Merak. They are well known among amateur astronomers as The Pointers. Photographed by Tony Fernandes at Rice Lake, Roseneath, Ontario, on the night of 31 July 2022.

It was a Super Full Moon last night. Traditionally, a full Moon in July is called the Buck Moon because a buck’s antlers are in full growth mode at this time. This full Moon is also known as the Thunder Moon because thunderstorms are so frequent during this month. The velvety antlers of male deer which first begin to sprout in early spring finish growing as summer peaks. They form pointed tips and harden into their final glory. For farmers, high summer is the time to cut and cure hay to put away for winter feed. For this reason, July’s full Moon is also known as the Full Hay Moon. Photos by Tony Fernandes.

Strawberry Moon

MOONwhile in Mississauga last night, the Strawberry Super Moon showed up in all its blazing glory, which gets its name from the wild strawberries that start to ripen during early summer. Other names for this Full Moon are Rose Moon, Hot Moon, and Mead Moon. In India, according to the Indian full moon calendar 2022, a full moon in June is memorably known as Jyeshtha Purnima (May/June). As on this auspicious day, married women observe fast for the longevity of their husband’s life. And as well as for the prosperity and happiness in their married life. Photos by Tony Fernandes.
