Fishing Boat at Baga Beach Goa, India.

Back in the days of my childhood in the 1960’s, Baga, a beach town in state of Goa, India, was one of my favourite places that I visited. It lies 2 km north of Calangute, which is popular with tourists and locals alike with a coastline of pristine golden-brown sands and the meandering and scenic Baga Creek, summed up in the excerpt below from by book ‘GOA - Memories of my Homeland’ (Poems & Stories).

Grandma's annual dip
In the Arabian Seas
For her aging knees
She thought was good indeed;
She took me along on a trip
To a idyllic place called Baga
On the eight o'clock "Carreira"

Dotted along Goa’s scenic beaches, boats fitted with an outrigger was a common sight, but nowadays motorboats are used. Fisher folk live along the coastline and cast their nets on a regular basis. Many families combine their efforts in going out to sea and a whole community helps in pulling in the nets. A familiar sight at times is strolling tourists lending a helping hand. All this and much much more in my new illustrated line-art book with descriptions, namely ‘A Line in Time’. It can be ordered online through www.ednaspickles.com.

Nossa Senhora de Graca - Our Lady of Grace - Margao, Goa, India

The Majestic Old Church of Nossa Senhora de Graça
(Our Lady of Grace) popularly known today as ‘Grace Church’
Margao, Salcete, Goa – India.

Water Colours 20 in x 16 in by Tony Fernandes 1990
From an old photograph taken during a visit to see a friend in Margao while on an annual vacation to Goa in the year 1973. (35mm Kodachrome Slide Film). A new church now stands in the same spot. However, the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima is in the same location.

History: Originally a chapel, called the Capela de Batalhão (Port. Chapel of the Battalion). Its construction began on 6.1.1812 and the first Mass was offered there on 3.5.1812. It was detached from the Holy Spirit Parish, Margao, and erected into a full-fledged Parish in 1959. The beautiful old church was demolished and the present church was built in its place. Inaugurated on 1.1.1977. Feast: 5th February
