Driving along this coast offers stunning and breath-taking views of the coastal region of Central California. Coming out of a sharp bend while driving south from Carmel and Monterey, tourists and regular drivers alike, stop for a breath of fresh air while takin in the awesome scenery - a treat for professional and amateur photographers.

Far right: Bixby Creek Bridge. also known as Bixby Bridge, is a reinforced concrete open-spandrel arch bridge in Big Sur, California. The bridge is located 120 miles (190 km) south of San Francisco and 13 miles (21 km) south of Carmel in Monterey County along State Route 1. First opened in 1932.
One of the most photographed bridges in California due to its aesthetic design.

This picture is taken from the layby on the Cabrillo Highway along the Pacific Coast, looking south, towards Carmel. Big Sur is a sparsely populated region of the Central Coast of California where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. The name "Big Sur" is derived from the original Spanish-language "el sur grande", meaning "the big south", or from "el país grande del sur", "the big country of the south". The terrain offers stunning views, making Big Sur a popular tourist destination. Big Sur's Cone Peak is the highest coastal mountain in the contiguous 48 states, ascending nearly a mile (5,155 feet/1571 m) above sea level, only three miles (4.8 km) from the ocean.

Thank you Shawn Evans for driving us there from San Mateo.
