GORE'S LANDING

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless
he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”
― André Gide

Gore's Landing

This is a community in Ontario - a village named after Thomas Sinclair Gore, an Irishman who is supposed to have settled there in 1845.
The so-called 'Landing' was terminus of a plank road from Cobourg to Rice Lake, where ferries met immigrant settlers heading to the northern townships across the lake. Eventually becoming a travellers' destination, it accomodated them in a number of hotels and inns. The famous painter of miniature painting, Gerald Hayward had a summer home here.
