What's in a Moon's name.

The Maine Farmer's Almanac first published Native American names for the full Moons in the 1930s. According to this almanac, as the full Moon in July – the Algonquin tribes in what is now the northeastern United States called this full Moon the Buck Moon. Early summer is normally when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. They also called this the Thunder Moon because of early Summer's frequent thunderstorms. Last night's Full Moon is also called Thunder Moon, Hay Moon, Mead Moon, Tu B'Av, Guru Purnima in India, Asalha Puha (also known as Dharma Day or Esala Poya), and the start of Vassa.

MEMORIES OF AL AQAH MOUNTAIN RIDGE, FUJAIRAH, U.A.E.

This was one of our favourite picnic spots during the years when we lived and worked in the UAE. The pictures shown above are taken nearly 40 years apart. A lot of changes have taken place in the interim, but the backdrop mountain ridge line has not and has remained as defined as ever. Now there is roundabout nearby where we pitched our tents and umbrellas, and the sprawling beach is thriving with numerous holiday resorts all along the coastline.

Coal Iron - Goa, India

 

The charcoal iron was widely used to press laundered clothes prior to the times of electric power in the villages in Goa. It was heated by smoldering coals which were taken from a fire and placed inside the iron. Fast burning coconut shells was one of the quickest way to get this gadget started. I remember    using this type of iron in my early teens. It had holes as air vents along the sides to allow the coals to continue burning. The lid of the basic box was hinged at the rear and fitted with a wooden handle to hold the iron in the process of ironing out creases from various types of clothing or linen. It remained hot as long as, or a little longer than the dying embers of the coal. It was available as cast iron or brass.

Tonferns Rhapsody #1 Party Starter

 

I spent a large part of my life DJing shows on the weekends for parties, special occasions and events under my alias "Tonferns Rhapsody" both in the Middle East as well as Canada. I have such fond memories and met so many incredible people along the way. That DJ journey got even cooler when my youngest daughter, Dahlia Fernandes of Dahlia Music started to co-DJ with me in her late teens and started to book her own gigs. She called me a couple of weeks ago with an awesome idea to have my legacy live on!

I will be gifting to you all, years of archived collections from my library with weekly playlists. I am very excited to still continue my music curation online. So stay tuned for my weekly YouTube and Spotify Playlists for your listening and dancing pleasure!

In Memoriam - Avril Isaacs (Paddle Your Own Canoe)

A heart of gold,

a smile of pure joy,

a kindness that

extended to all she knew.

A beautiful Funeral service for Avril Isaacs

was held on Saturday June 26th at 10:30 EST. 

at St. Martin of Tours, Mississauga, Ontario. Canada,

attended by family members and friends.

Mass Celebrant: Rev. Fr. Gijo Muthanattu, O. Carm (Pastor)

Avril will forever be remembered by her husband, Vincent, of 50 years, her two children Giselle (Christian) and Geoffrey (Karen) and her five grandchildren whom she was so proud of, Ariel, Michael, Safia, Tyler and Lauren. Sister to Yvette (Malcom d.) Andrews, Robin (Brenda) Werkmeister, and Christopher Werkmeister. She will also be fondly remembered and missed by her friends. Avril was an amazing, strong, genuine and courageous person, kind and generous to those around. These qualities are present in the grandchildren she helped raise and whom she loved unconditionally. Everyone who had the good fortune to meet and get to know her, knew how she always made them feel loved.

STRAWBERRY MOON in June last evening was hard to capture. The sky was cloudy as the full Moon rose gently above the horizon. June’s full Moon - typically the last full Moon of spring or the first of summer - is traditionally called the Strawberry Moon. This name has been used by Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota peoples, among others, to mark the ripening of strawberries that are ready to be gathered. This beautiful 18th century fort served until 1970 as the palace of the Ruler of Ajman, one of the smallest of the seven Emirates. The old fortress was converted into Ajman Museum in 1991.

Hard to find Cookbooks

The above clipping appeared in Navhind Times, Goa, written by journalist Frederick Noronha about my wife's Recipe Book “Savour the flavour of India”. This Recipe book, along with my book “Goa - Memories of my Homeland”, were first published in Year 2004 in Ontario, Canada. The 2nd Editions of both books were published in Year 2005 at Pilar Printing Centre in Goa, India. These books were available at Broadway store in Panjim, and at various Book stores in Mapuca & Panjim. You could even grab a copy at the Dabolim Airport Book store. Unfortunately, they are both sold out, although Frederick Noronha did offer to publish them as he owns a publishing company.
